Some of us were lucky enough to grow up in a healthy family in which mother and father shared roles lovingly without major conflicts, in which the relationship between father and mother was close and deep and based on mutual respect, and where the father was also able to meet the needs of the children and used his strength and masculinity lovingly and responsibly.
Many of us had different experiences, and deep within our souls lies a longing for healing and reconciliation in our relationship with our father. Often, as children, we had to reject our own father out of loyalty to our mother in order to maintain the vital closeness to our mother, and we carry the father wound within us—an emotional hole. This often manifests later as a chronic illness: Symptoms often remind us, in a rather metaphorical way, of our father's peculiarities or problems. But perhaps he himself was severely traumatized or suffered from an untreated illness that affected his behavior?
Many of us carry deep wounds within us. Healing often seems impossible. We may still be trying to punish our father by denying healing or even reconciliation. Is the father who is alive today really the father who wounded us back then? The deepest connection to the father, the one that survives death: is it the connection to the one who hurt us through their upbringing, their illness, or their trauma? Or is it the connection with their soul, which was perhaps loving and good? How can we experience the difference and know it permanently?
